The youngest son of Genghis Khan by his wife Borte, he served with distinction in campaigns against the Khwarezmid Empire and northern China. After his father's death, he became the Empire's interim ruler for the two years until Ögedai Khan's ascension to the throne was confirmed at the kuriltai.
In 1232, when his brother was sickened by a disease during a campaign in China, Tolui sacrificed himself in a shamanic ritual, saving his brother's life at the cost of his own.
