Pedia

Pedia

Welcome to the Foreworld 'Pedia. This is the central location for all knowledge about the world of The Mongoliad, including the cast of characters and the various groups to which these people belong, including the Ordo Militum Vindicis Intactae and the Theophylacti. You will also find information about relevant historical martial arts references such as vom Tag.

Many pages on the 'Pedia are user-editable and we welcome your contributions. Other pages have secrets....

We're still working out how best to navigate this thing. Our current thinking is that navigation by tag allows us to have multiple independent hierarchies so that it's easy to find things by whatever criterion you happen to pick. We're still figuring out the mechanics of it, but you can explore the tags here. You can also view a list of all pages on the 'Pedia, or enter a search term in the box at the top of the screen (if you are using a web browser). A cheat sheet on what we have found out so far about its inner workings can be found here.

Give us some ability to report or correct spelling errors.

Check this one out:

The sword wasn't a very good projectile, but his aim was true and he threw with considerably force.

"Condiderably" force? Is that a force which has the ability to be considered?

BobbyShaftoe 0 points a year ago [-]

No, hang on, that would be "considerable" force. Not to mention that I mis-spelled it as con*d*iderably (how meta!).

mark 1 point a year ago [-]

If you could reply on the page in question, that would help us track down the spelling error (in this case, it was Haakon's Fight). Much obliged, Bobby.

Will do mate.

Story is already awesome.

Looking forward to what's to come!

"including the Ordo Militum Vindicis Intactae and the Theophylacti."

Ah! This is why I am here. Having read very little of it yet, I already grow enthusiastic for this story, and the project as a whole.

Is there / can you provide / should we write meta pages for the style of 'Pedia pages?

danny 1 point a year ago [-]

I asked about meta content in the forum, and the answer was that we should not put it into 'Pedia. It was suggested that room could be made for meta content in some other location, but this haa not happened yet.

could there be a page for shamanism, the religion of the mongols? and alchemy and the metaphysicists?

mark 1 point a year ago [-]

Absolutely. Feel free to start them.

What I've come to notice, as someone who is quite familiar with wikiformatting (helper-type of an user with some perks, not an admin... in one of the largest (mebbe 5th largest atm) wikis online), is that the 'Pedia currently needs streamlining, and a clearer system for organising the content. A table of content would be vital for the main page, and perhaps an individual "search the 'pedia" -function.

I have brought this up in the forum as well... There could be a list of content categories on the 'Pedia main page, for example Martial Arts, Period Costume, Geography, Personnages (pardon my French), Cuisine and Medicine to give some examples. These links would then lead to a category main page, with a more thorough list of articles with links, so it is easier to find them. Perhaps it's just me, but I can't find anything I'm looking for straight away via the 'Pedia link.

The "Hot Pages" section to the left reminds me of a "recent changes" feature, as well...

Oh, and the editing function baffles me a little. There were a lot of dashes and stuff involved, while I'm used to HTML tags, mostly.

jeremy 2 points a year ago [-]

Well if you're up for it, have a shot yourself at replacing the current contents of the page with something more useful!

I will spend some time putting in a Pedia-only search facility if people think it'll be useful, too. (We know that search is terribly slow and there's a project underway to speed it up as well.)

ViktoriaV 2 points a year ago [-]

I'll just have to figure out the editing, and how it works. And I think shuffling pages about is not something I'd begin with... Maybe just try to make a table of content on a separate page and prompt people to add pages they've made to it...

I already noticed some of my "links" turned into links to pages that don't exist yet, so the categories might be doable more easily than I'm used to. I'm just not familiar with the site's editing features yet. :)

mark 1 point a year ago [-]

The tagging system is meant to be used as a mechanism for content categories as that is dynamic and won't require someone to continually update static pages that track contents of categories. So, before we get into making tables of contents and adding page links, let's have a conversation about how to make the tagging work more effectively.

jeremy 1 point a year ago [-]

I agree that something dynamic would be best, but there's also the question of how to integrate that information into the top page. I think "tag more pages" is probably the first step to making the tagging work better!

I've been discussing this with Jeremy in irc, and only found out because of him, that there even *is* a menu to the right (he said he's implementing changes that remedy the problem with the screen size). Apparently it's set to hide it, if the window is "narrow", and my screen is that of one of the first ever netbooks, a baffling 8.1"...

I didn't know there is a Special:all page, or a Special:tags/tree. 99% of the sites I've seen have a two-column layout, and it never even struck me as a possibility to look for a navigation menu on the other side, due to the layout being left-heavy, with one menu already there, with the pretty knotwork border and all. I'm not a professional UI designer, but I do get exposed to a lot of game designers in my everyday life, and am even a voluntary tester on some projects, so I'm used to spewing out what's on my mind about the functionality of things.

I'm suggesting that you link to the two from a separate paragraph in the bulk text of the main page in the wiki, so people like me, who either are technologically challenged (Jeremy did say you gents hid the right menu, not my brain) or just don't know where to look, can navigate to what they're looking for.

To give an example of a two-column layout everyone is subconsciously familiar with and definitely recognises, just go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random

Sadly, I'm not as tech savvy as most of you, gentlemen, so beyond "HotCat"-style apps (wikia's own little quick category tagging app) and existing drop-down tag list, I can't really say I can think of anything else atm.

I would still suggest the cabal considers some form of a streamlined wiki navigation menu, preferably "smack in the middle of" either the main text frame on the screen, or adding a copy of the menu links to the right also into the left menu frame.

I've never been a part of a wiki community, so bare with me... I've been finding standard google searches work nicely for locating content in this wiki.

jonathanpatt 1 point a year ago [-]

There's also a search link at the top of each page which among other things, searches the 'Pedia. You can view all pages of the 'Pedia here. I tend to just navigate to pages via the URL if I'm trying to look something up. In that way, it acts most like a rapid reference for terms I don't know when I'm reading a chapter.

ViktoriaV 1 point a year ago [-]

A teeny update: Despite clearing the cache and forced reload, the right hand side menu is still missing. Had Jeremy not mentioned it exists, I wouldn't know about the wiki navigation related links. :(

cdpino 1 point a year ago [-]

How can you possibility build something intended to be a "Wikipedia" style encyclopedia of this world by making its homepage linkless? Why not build a link structure tied to the story or the forum?

Kamamuri 1 point a year ago [-]

It was a bit confusing for me at the beginning, I was expecting something more like this link, however in retrospect I appreciate the explanation and examples. This is after all something new.

Sicarius 3 points a year ago [-]

Also, I think the user pages shoud be seperated from the rest of the pedia, they're getting to the point where they'll almost outnumber the rest of the pages.

Kamamuri 2 points a year ago [-]

Agreed. They don't feel in the spirit of the rest of the pedia.

srdonovan 2 points a year ago [-]

Is this something that is being done? As the number of user pages increase, this will stand out even more as an issue with the pedia.

Kamamuri 2 points a year ago [-]

I think the reply we got was that user pages are part of the pedia, so they have to be in 'all pedia pages'. And that we should use the Tags feature when searching a particular page.

jatsal 2 points a year ago [-]

I think the tagging system would be really reasonable, but unfortunatelly adding tags still does not work. So for most leaves of the tagging tree there is still no information available, which makes it currently not yet really useful. Hope the feature of adding tags will be made available soon.

So before I even peek into the Pedia, how is it on defending me from spoilers?

jeremy 2 points a year ago [-]

People are very good about marking spoilers with the <<spoiler>> tag, which hides them from view unless you select the text in question.

paulfidalgo 1 point a year ago [-]

That's a genuine relief.
