GLOSSARY OF FAN FICTION CHARACTERS:

Dysingli Soon - a youth of Rome laboring in the laundry and feather plume business, originally of Slavic and/or Mongolian descent and self-identified as a half-breed.

Ranjisek Soon - Mother of Dysingli Soon, friend of Ocerhoe, and one of the last members of the mysterious Binder order left in the City of Rome. Estranged wife of Simcolek Soon, who once ran a successful horse-breeding farm in the area between the Don and Volga Rivers, before Mongol invasions impacted the area.

Sopranet Soon - distant cousin of Dysingli and Ranjisek; an amateur historian of limited skill and great powers of exaggeration. He aids in freeing Brother Thomas from prison in Rome, via negotiations with Brother Nigel.

Brother Nigel - a monk in Oxford, England.

Brother Thomas - a colleague of Brother Nigel's who was sent to Rome with a message for the Pope. After being imprisoned on false charges, he is released by the use of a commissioned assignment to visit the Khazar Khaganate, arranged and financed by Brother Nigel.

Tiala - a middle-aged woman of Armenian descent, also known as the rag lady. She is a Jewish dealer in second-hand fabrics who assists Dysingli Soon with hiding when the Roman Guards seek to arrest him. Sometime romantic partner to Sopranet Soon. Tiala hopes to flee to the Khazar Khaganate, to meet up with her other family members that have escaped Armenian persecution.

Vorlockren - Tiala's nephew, a successful alchemist and mid-level advisor in the Khazarian court.

Garzig - mentor and father figure to Dysingli Soon. The Master of the laundry operation for the House of Orsini in Rome. Garzig is also a retired Mongolian gladiator. Brother-in-law of Ranjisek Soon, and uncle of Dysingli.

Tabriz - a Persian man who serves as leader and defender of a theater troupe circling through the cities and villages near the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea. Tabriz is the mentor and father figure to a group of 18 performers in a traveling caravan.

Plyshiantzu and Glernovya - stallions owned by Simcolek Soon.

Dershod - a youth from the Luhans'k area, who was rescued from a Mongol attack by a member of the Soon family.

Medforminlen - a Lindorm or half-lizard and half-human, found roaming in the area located east of the Don River. A human becomes a Lindorm due to a curse or enchantment, which can be removed by a complicated antidote.

Osseran - a young woman from Luhans'k who bears two twin daughters in the late spring of 1242. Wife of Dershod.

Wedwonyl and Cyarwonate - twin daughters of Osseran and Dershod, born in 1242.

I'm in on the "I doubt it" format story.

What is the "I doubt it" format story?

Sorry Mark. I did not fully understand the TOS earlier, but now I am starting to see your point, as well as the others who have posted here. The efforts that you have asked me to freeze or not pursue further have now been frozen and not pursued further, as requested. The answers we are receiving lately about the role of the fan fiction might have been better answered earlier. On the whole, I still like the multi-faceted aspects of the Mongoliad. I don't want to see the "group effort" break down into divisiveness. So I appreciate your patience explaining the Cabal position, and accept it.

The copyright discussion is like a large cargo of really bad news. I will think on it for a couple weeks and see if any other options are available. Just the act of entering my own material (not the main Mongoliad story line) into a contest should not be considered a "commercial venture." However, on the off-chance that the submission should win and be eligible for publishing, then a further negotiation might be necessary. I would hope for some kind of cooperative airing of the fan fiction, as this site was initially billed as a shared effort. I'm probably hoping for too much idealism, but hoping anyway.

Nebulara, Regarding: Did I fall down a different rabbit hole than everybody else?

No, you are not the only one. As an interactive novel, the collective and collaborative component was publicized quite frequently. Also, I was not under the impression of having signed an exclusive employment contract, like a non-compete sort of thing. I am just a volunteer contributor. There was talk of a Dickensian business model, in that Dickens also produced serialized novels.

joannamilan wrote:I am referring to the "Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award" or ABNA. It is not only for fan fiction but many genres, so I need to qualify my previous post in that respect.

The problem is you don't have the rights that are required by the first sentence in Section 5 of the content rules: "By submitting an Entry and if you are selected as a Quarter-Finalist or Semi-Finalist, you grant Penguin the exclusive first publication rights to your Entry."

We can get into semantics about sections 3a and 3e as well, but Section 5 is the real killer. So, Joanna, if you have submitted content that you've posted here for the ABNA, I'm asking you to withdraw it, please.

OK. It appears that the submission does not meet requirements on several levels. I would probably be better off writing something non-Mongoliad and resubmitting next year. Do not want an endless rehash of "Terms of Service" discussion. That is not a very creative event, on the whole. So unless there is a "fair use" exception, all fan fiction posted here is owned by Subutai, I gather. You own what you own, end of story. A bit punitive for "volunteer" contributors with no other resources to promote their work, but perhaps I can focus on some other work that is not at all related to the Mongoliad.
