In the year 1241, Europe was collectively shitting its pants (that's "bewraying its kecks" for you Medieval time-travelers) because it looked like the entire continent would be destroyed by Mongol invaders.
A small band of warriors, inheritors of a millennium-old secret tradition, set out to defend the continent. Theirs is an impossible mission and they will probably all die, but such service is the only way they know.
